This academic year, we have decided to send out a newsletter each module, detailing what students are currently learning in their personal development (form time) sessions. Alongside this, we will promote events and activities that are taking place at the school.

Module 1: Personal Development at LAB
Transition and safety – Transition to secondary school and personal safety in and outside school, including first aid.
Drugs and alcohol – Alcohol and drug misuse and pressures relating to drug use.
Peer influence – Healthy and unhealthy friendships, assertiveness, substance misuse, and gang exploitation and substance use and gangs.
Mental health and ill health, stigma, safeguarding health, including during periods of transition or change.
Building for the future: Self-efficacy, stress management, and future opportunities.
Thriving in Post-16 Education.
This month at Leigh Academy Blackheath: Black History Month 2023 “Saluting our Sisters”
What’s on:
Cultural dress day (20th October 2023)
Students will be able to donate and wear either cultural dress or red. All money raised will go to the anti-racism charity Show Racism the Red Card.
BHM Poetry Competition
Students need to write a poem focusing on a black woman or black women that they find inspiring. Winners and runners up for each Key Stage to be entered into the national competition. Deadline 16th October 2023.
‘Inspirational individuals’ Art competition
Students to produce an artistic piece focusing on a black figure of inspiration. Deadline 16th October 2023.
BHM book of the week for the duration of the month.
The book for this week is the 2019 Booker Prize winner “Girl, Woman, Other” by Bernadine Evaristo.
BHM listening calendar in collaboration with the music department
3 x Student-led BHM assemblies across the month.
3x BHM form time activities every week.
