Principal’s Welcome

Back to virtual open day

Welcome from the Principal

Emma Smith

Welcome to Leigh Academy Blackheath (LAB). My name is Emma Smith and I have the privilege to be the Principal here, at LAB.

Leigh Academy Blackheath is an 11-18 comprehensive secondary school which opened in the Royal Borough of Greenwich in September, 2018.  Approved by the DfE in wave 8 of the free school programme, LAB will provide 180 student places in each year group from 7-11, and 250 in the sixth form. The academy will reach full capacity in September, 2024.

This is our 4th open event and each year we receive a growing number of applications for our 180 year 7 places; last year we received over 1000 applications for our 2020 intake.

After a long wait, we moved into our fabulous new building in September: a bespoke design to accommodate our college structure and ‘schools within schools’ model. Although we would like to invite you to visit, due to the current circumstances we can only host a virtual open event this year. We understand that a virtual open event does not give you the chance to speak to members of our community, but you will find lots of information on our website; in addition to this, our students have created a short film to show you around the building. We hope it gives you an idea of our learning space and what it feels like to be a student at LAB.

If you have any questions, please email us at: and we will be happy to answer these for you. Please be aware that you may not receive a direct response, but we will post as many responses as possible on our frequently asked question page, found on the virtual open event page of our website.

Best wishes,

E Smith | Principal
