In LAB16, we adopt a more flexible approach to dress code that reflects the modern professional workplace. We believe that this additional autonomy at post-16 is important for students – this increased responsibility for their choices prepares them well for future independence and employment.

We expect students to look presentable and respectable in a professional environment – a style that is often referred to as ‘business casual’ or ‘business professional’. A suitably chosen attire, including hair, makeup, nails, and accessories, should demonstrate respect to our community and ensure personal safety.

Examples of clothing that our students wear in order to meet the dress code expectations include:

  • dress shirts
  • polo shirts
  • blouses
  • trousers
  • chinos
  • dresses/skirts of an appropriate length
  • cardigans, jumpers and sweaters.

Footwear should be presentable, practical and comfortable; for example dress shoes, deck shoes, leather boots or casual/plain trainers.

Note: Students are not required to wear suits but many choose to. In June/July, students are permitted to wear smart shorts.

The following clothing items are styles do not align with our dress code and therefore are not permitted:

  • Exposed shoulders or midriff
  • Denim e.g. jeans or denim jacket
  • Leather e.g. leather trouser or jacket
  • Clothing with large logos or graphics
  • Tracksuits, joggers, sports shorts or hooded tops
  • Impractical footwear i.e. open toes, unsupported back or heels

*Students pursuing the BTEC Sport pathway are permitted to wear appropriate sportswear only for the days that they have practical lessons.

If a student wears an item of clothing or outfit that does not align with the LAB16 Dress Code and are unable to rectify this in school, they may be required to return home to change.

Support is available for families who are facing financial hardship and finding it difficult to ensure their child has appropriate clothing to meet the LAB16 dress code requirements. If you find yourself in this situation, click the button below for more information.

LAB16 Student Pass and Lanyard

Students are issued with a student pass and lanyard which must be worn at all times. Given that students are not wearing a uniform, these lanyards and passes identify students as part of LAB16 and therefore a member of the school community. Students also require their pass to sign-in and out, and for access in and around the building since their pass allows them to enter parts of the building which are out-of-bounds to younger students.

If students forget their pass and lanyard, they are required to collect a temporary one from the LAB16 Student Services Manager (SSM) at the start of the school day.
