WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF POST-16

We are proud to be an ambitious sixth form. Leigh Academy Blackheath is an IB World School and only one of a handful of schools across the country, and the only school in south east London to offer both IB programmes at post-16: the Career-related Programme (CP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). Both are academically and personally challenging programmes, enabling students to receive a holistic education that goes further than exam results.

LAB16 is a great community thanks to our inclusive and supportive environment. Our structured induction programme which includes an exciting residential activity week allows students to feel part of this community from the start of their LAB16 journey. The opportunities continue, and are numerous throughout their two years. For those that are looking to continue their education at a top university, we have a dedicated Oxbridge programme to support students make a competitive application.

I ask you to be open-minded and inquirers as you explore the two IB programmes we offer – they have much more to offer than standalone qualifications such as A Levels and BTECs. It’s for this reason IB students are sought after by universities and employers in the UK and across the world, and that’s why we proud to only offer the IB at post-16.

A Global education on your doorstep

LAB16 is a values driven community.  Everything we do, and strive to achieve, starts with our 5 core values: Respect, Integrity, Scholarship, Ambition, and Resilience.

As an IB World School these values are inextricably linked to the IB Learner Profile, a range of human attributes which go beyond academic success and form the foundation of the IB ethos.  These attributes are not only valuable assets for any individual to acquire, but they are key behaviours and attitudes keenly sought out by university admissions teams and employers alike.

The IB Learner Profile

We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.

We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.

We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.

We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.

We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.

We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.

We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.

We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives—intellectual, physical, and emotional—to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.

We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.

International Baccalaureate

The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the organisation works with schools, governments and international establishments to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
