Academy’s pride at excellent IB results

Three students are standing indoors, each holding papers. The background features text on a wall, with words like "communicators," "knowledgeable," and "reflective," which are often part of educational institution's values or mission statements. The papers they are holding appear to be official documents, consistent with receiving exam results.

There is an overwhelming sense of pride at Leigh Academy Blackheath this week as our community celebrates the achievements of its inaugural cohort of LAB16 students and their excellent set of IB exam results. Students studying both the IB Diploma (DP) and Careers Related (CP) Programmes received their full awards yesterday, along with over 192,000 other students across 152 countries globally.

Overall, our students did better than their starting points suggested they would with a value added measure for this cohort reaching 0.21.  With 89% of grades at 4 or above, and outcomes for the core assessments expecting to meet or exceed the IB global averages, these results are incredibly strong for our first set of post 16 students.

Mrs Smith, Principal of Leigh Academy Blackheath, commented:

“I am so happy for our amazing LAB16 students, they have taken this opportunity to study the IB and achieved outcomes that have the potential to be life changing.  The average total UCAS point score for a LAB16 IBDP student equals that of an A-Level student achieving 3 ‘grade A’s’, which is really impressive!

The bright outdoor setting and the papers held by the students indicate an important day, often associated with exam results.

For some students, these results are the end of their 7 year journey at LAB, having joined us as founding students in 2018.  They leave us ready and determined to leave their footprint on the world, and I am truly very excited to see what they achieve.”

DP students can achieve a total of 45 points.  Huge recognition must go to the following students who achieved exceptional overall results:

  • Anna – 42
  • Suchay – 39
  • Alex – 37
  • Adrianna – 36
  • Kristien – 35

Rory and Christina, both CP students, also secured exceptional results with 5’s in both of their IB courses and a grade A for their Reflective Project.  Like other CP students they now have a few weeks to wait for the results of their BTEC courses, but are pleased to know they are another step closer to the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

Students did particularly well in English, maths, global politics and chemistry, and all elements of the IB core in both the DP and CP.

We wish all of our students the very best of luck for their next adventure, and share with you a few of the courses they are now going on to study:

  • Anna – Chemistry with International study at University of Manchester
  • Suchay – Physics at University College London
  • Kristien – Politics and international studies at University of Warwick
  • Rhianna – Criminology and Spanish at University of Liverpool

A mixture of other courses include: Global design engineering and the Institute of Engineering and Design, London, chemistry at University of Bath, architecture at Ravensbourne University, biomedical sciences at University of Surrey, psychology at University of Essex.

We wish all of our year 13 students every success for the future, and congratulate them on achieving their brilliant IB results this summer.  Well done class of 2025!
