In September 2024, the Trust introduced a consistent naming structure to build on our sense of pride and community. This phased programme began with over half of our academies adopting their new names in the first year. We are now completing this process by renaming our remaining academies. The decision followed extensive consultation with local board governors, academy leadership teams, our Founding Sponsor Sir Geoffrey Leigh, and livery company partners. The overwhelming majority supported this change, recognising the benefits of closer partnership and collaboration within the Leigh network.
Leigh Academy Blackheath will not be changing its name, however, from September 2025, we will be updating our logo to remove the shield from the current version. All branding, including signage and digital materials, will be updated to reflect this change. This will also be reflected in pupil uniforms.
Why are we renaming the academies?
The new naming structure strengthens our identity as a unified educational community, making it easier to attract staff and pupils. A strong Trust identity has been shown to support staff recruitment and retention, with 89% of applicants in a recent survey stating that the Trust’s reputation positively influenced their decision to apply. The LAT name has already driven positive change in Greenwich, Bexley, Kent, and Medway, and we anticipate further benefits as more academies adopt the Leigh name.
What does this mean for uniform?
To minimise costs for parents, all existing uniform items can continue to be worn until they are naturally outgrown or worn out. This allows families to pass on items to siblings as they do now. Any new uniform items purchased for the next academic year will reflect the academy’s new name. This approach ensures that parents are not required to incur additional costs beyond normal wear and tear.
Will individual academies lose their identity?
No. Each academy will retain its distinct ethos, values, and character while aligning with the overarching vision of the Trust. The new naming structure balances a common framework with elements of each academy’s existing identity.
Will academies have to contribute financially to the rebranding?
No. The Trust will cover all costs associated with the renaming, ensuring that neither academies nor parents face any financial burden.
