Time to celebrate!
Last week we invited a team of reviewers from Challenge Partners to visit LAB and undertake a peer review of the academy. This formal style review included observations of lessons, and a deep dive into our curriculum, approach to teaching and learning and pastoral care. It also included a range of meetings between the review team and students, staff and governors. Reviews are judged on the following point scale: leading, effective, working towards effective, and ineffective.
I am delighted to announce that following the three day review, the visiting Challenge Partners team judged the academy to be ‘Leading’ in all areas, with an area of excellence in digital strategy. It is a fantastic achievement for the entire academy community, and provides long awaited verification of the good work we have achieved together. It is particularly rewarding given the many varied challenges faced by schools this academic year.
We will be sending out more details regarding the report once we have received it in full, and will share the good news on our website shortly.
Staying safe at LAB – COVID-19
We have been relatively lucky regarding COVID cases since our return in March, however, yesterday we unfortunately had to send two classes home to isolate for 10 days. As reported in the news, the number of positive cases are growing once again, and we need to respond accordingly to ensure all members of the academy community are safe. Therefore, from Wednesday 30th June 2021, anyone on site at LAB (staff and students) will be required to wear a mask in communal areas. Please ensure that your child has a clean and suitable mask with them to wear accordingly. We will not be asking students to wear masks in classrooms unless they wish to do so, or if they are undertaking an activity which compromises the normal safe socially distanced arrangements.
Please, can I take this opportunity to remind you that we wish all students to take a lateral flow test every Sunday and Wednesday evening, and inform the academy as soon as possible of any positive result.
Last day of Module 5
The last day of module 5 will be Wednesday 21st July and we will close at 12.20pm. Please note that the restaurant will not serve lunch on this day, details regarding free school meals will be sent out separately to relevant families.
Tour of the building
We had hoped to be hosting tours of the new building this week to our parents and carers, however, due to the delayed lifting of restrictions we have not been able to do so. We are now hoping to provide an opportunity for you all to visit LAB after school on Tuesday 20th July, government guidance permitting. More details will follow.
Safety outside school
We have been made aware of a couple of recent incidents in the local area where young people have experienced unwanted attention, or been photographed or filmed by an unknown adult. We continue to have a high presence before and after school in neighbouring streets, and around Blackheath Standard, but are unable to supervise all students in all locations at all times. Please can we ask that you talk to your child(ren) about these incidents and discuss ways they can keep safe when travelling alone.
