Apologies for the long letter, but there are a number of important pieces of information to share with you this week.
International Baccalaureate World School – MYP
Firstly, it is with great pride and pleasure that I am able to announce that Leigh Academy Blackheath is now officially an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.
All members of the LAB community were involved in the rigorous authorisation process, including parents and carers, students, governors and staff. I have included an excerpt from our authorisation letter below:
“As an IB World School offering the MYP, you are part of a global community of schools committed to developing knowledgeable, caring young people who will be ready to negotiate their futures successfully and make contributions resulting in a more harmonious and peaceful world. We commend your school’s educators, administrators, students and families for their active roles in choosing to offer the MYP. The positive results of this choice will become evident in your community as classes of MYP students graduate and undertake activities that enhance social, cultural and economic environments locally, nationally and, perhaps, internationally.”
We are very proud to deliver the IBMYP at LAB and are excited by the rich and varied opportunities it provides for our students.
Face Coverings and Bubble Arrangements
As I am sure you will have seen in the news, the guidance for face coverings in education has been amended. This change means that from Monday 17th May, LAB students and staff will not be required to wear a face covering in a classroom or academy communal area. This also includes time spent travelling around the academy between learning spaces. Students who use public transport should continue to carry a mask with them for use on their commute.
We will continue to operate a bubble system until the end of this academic year. No plans are in place for a bubble system from September 2021 onwards, but the academy will continue to review government guidance and respond accordingly.
Lateral Flow Testing
Please make sure your child takes a lateral flow test every Sunday and Wednesday evening. New boxes of test kits will be sent home at the end of next week. Please follow the guidance on the LAT Testing portal when reporting results, the link to which you will find here.
Drop Off and Pick Up
Once again I would like to appeal to all parents and carers who drop off or pick up their child on or near to the school campus. The traffic on Old Dover Road is incredibly heavy at the start and end of the academy day, and the safety of our students is compromised when the flow of traffic is interrupted by waiting vehicles. We have once again received complaints from neighbours whose driveways have been blocked by waiting parents and carers. Please, therefore, do not drop off or pick up your child[ren] in the immediate vicinity of the school campus.
You are now able to purchase LAB uniforms from Whitehall Clothiers, in Lewisham. We continue to work with Brigade and details of both suppliers can be found on our website.
