Letter from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

I have written to you before regarding the negative impact social media, in particular WhatsApp groups, can have on our young people and their ability to build positive and lasting friendships.  Over the last few weeks we have been dealing with an increased number of issues between LAB students which have arisen due to negative interaction on WhatsApp groups outside of the academy and school hours.

Through our tutor programme, pastoral intervention work and the online safety content of our Computing curriculum, at LAB we continuously work with all students to make them aware of the negative effects of poor engagement with social media.  To make sure we maximise the positive benefits of this work, we would like to ask parents and carers to actively support our approach and discuss their child’s use of social media with them at home.

To support these conversations you may find the following resources available on the National online Safety site useful. To create your account, please follow NOS and complete your details. When you’re set up, you’ll be able to set ‘Parent/Carer’ as your user type.

You can access National Online Safety online via any device, including via a smartphone app. To download the app, please go to https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/national-online-safety/id1530342372
